Wish

There were alot of things he wished for throughout his life. Most of them weren't worth recalling, butterflies, that expensive pair of sneakers. Some of them still burn in his mind, the yearning for freedom and a sense of importance--that secure knowledge of why you are alive and your purpose for existance.

He's tried the superstitious route once before, blowing candles and weeds and eyelashes. He's tried making them a reality through force of will and arm. He's even tried bargaining and buying his way into his dreams.

He's eventually given up entirely on them. He never did get those sneakers.

Life was hard, bitter, and cruel. He's learned that the hard way a long time before.

She hasn't. She thinks she has...oh yes, she thinks she knows the darkest the world can hand to her. He can see it in her eyes whenever she speaks on the matter.

He lets her keep thinking she does, because as soon as she realizes just how dark this world truly is, when she finally gives up hope for its redemption, everything that is her will be gone.

Then he'll be on his own again, because she'll finally figure out that she can't save him any more than she can save this world.

He likes to say he lets her live in her fantasy world for her own benifit--she's much too young to know how filthy and unclean and unforgivable this world is. He's only fooling himself. He can't enlighten her, because he can't see her bright eyes turn haunted, and he can't watch her vanish into thin air as if she had never been.

Her golden hair shines in the moonlight as he turns his head to gaze at her perfect form--much too perfect for a world like this--she looks up and smiles at him, and for a brief moment he remembers what it's like to have a wish.

He reaches a hand over to clasp both of hers on the pillow, and returns her smile as best as he can manage (he can never regain that innocence she is so imbued with). She inches closer to him, eyes sparkling with her lingering youth.

"...Never change." His voice is only a faint whisper in the air, but she seems to have no difficulty deciphering it, grinning with child-like amusement.

He wonders how long something like her can last with someone like him before she begins to twist and taint and lose herself without even knowing it. He should shoo her out, lock the door, and run away. Its the only way to prevent her from becoming him.

He knows better than to wish for the strength to make her leave. He can never let go, no matter what destruction lay in store for her should she stay...because it was never about her, or what she wanted. It was always about him.

All he can wish for is that she finds out before it's too late, and that death follows swiftly thereafter.

AN: Um. Well. That was odd. XD I just wrote it in one sitting, and I'm pretty sure I intended it to be much happier than that.
